I’ve just released a minor update to WP-Phototagger. Changes include:
Admin javascript fixes–this should fix the issues people have been reporting when adding new tags
PHP4 compatibility –this plugin is now fully working in PHP4.x!

This is a fabulous plugin! I’ve been looking for something like this for quite some time. Thanks!
Any chance that a later version will allow one to add text annotations that appear when the tagged area is hovered over (as in Flickr notes), rather than a link to a URL? My employer is looking for something like this to use in a Wordpress blog for a university class, and I don’t have anything close to the skills necessary to create it. If your wizardry happened to be working in that direction, I can’t tell you how grateful I’d be!

I’m glad you’re enjoying the plugin. I’ll consider your suggestion for future versions, but for the time being my main goals are working out the remaining bugs and getting the plugin working with as many themes as possible.
I am available for freelance plugin development work if you’re looking for that sort thing.

does your plugin enable visitors to my site to use this function (like on Matt Mullenweg`s site) or is only the admin able to tag images?

It would be nice to have the admin functions when you are adding an image to a post or page but I do not know how involved this would be?

I don’t have any plans to add this functionality at the moment, although it is possible in future releases.

Glad you find it useful!
My immediate plans are to get the plugin working in as many themes and browsers as possible. Adding the admin tagging functionality to the post creation screen seems like it would be a lot of work, and of limited benefit since you can always edit the tags in another tab or something.
I’m not saying it will never happen, but it isn’t high on my list of priorities.
